Foxconn reportedly investing in micro-LED for one key reason

The Apple iPhone XS and XS Max use OLED panels.

Micro-LED technology is years away from deployment in the consumer market, but Foxconn is reportedly investing in the technology and manufacturing.

According to the Economic Daily News, the Foxconn Group continues to invest in micro-LED technology so that it will be in a good position to win orders from Apple in the future.

Three of its subsidiaries - Advanced Optoelectronic Technology (AOT), Epileds Technologies and Marketech International - will be developing and building up their capacities in the production of micro-LED and equipment.

Apple is rumored to be interested in micro-LED technology as it offers benefits such as slimmer designs, brighter panels and lower power consumption. The iPhone maker is said to be developing its own micro-LED displays at a secret facility.

Its in-house efforts are boosted by the acquisition of LuxVue in 2014. LuxVue held the intellectual property for the manufacturing process of micro-LED. Apple is also believed to be in discussions with PlayNitride on cooperation in the micro-LED market. The first Apple products to adopt micro-LED could be the Apple Watch followed by the iPhone
