Among the handful of Wear OS watch makers, Fossil is without doubt the biggest. Today, the American fashion designer and manufacturer has announced the Carlyle HR and Juliana HR, two Wear OS-powered smartwatches that fall under the company’s newest Gen 5 lineup.

Offered in a total of six styles (differentiated by case colours and straps) and priced at US$295 each, Fossil’s Gen 5 Wear OS smartwatches all have a 44mm case size with a 1.28-inch OLED screen, feature a stainless steel body (12mm thick) and rotating power button and use 22mm bands and come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100 chip, 8GB storage and 1GB RAM.

In addition to activity tracking (steps, calories, etc.), both the Carlyle HR and Juliana HR are able to measure heart rate automatically during a workout and can be taken for a swim (3ATM water resistance). The watches also come pre-installed with Cardiogram, an app that uses deep neural network technology to monitor heart rate changes and alert the user if it detects signs of sleep apnea, diabetes, hypertension and atrial fibrillation.

Of course, being Wear OS smartwatches means that the Carlyle HR and Juliana HR will work with Google services including Google Pay and Google Assistant. To relay Assistant’s responses, the Gen 5 hardware includes a speaker, which can also be used for taking calls and playing music. According to The Verge, this call answering feature will work on the iPhone as well, but is only coming later this fall after an app update.

Fossil is touting the extended battery life on the Gen 5 watches. Three smart battery modes are available: Daily, Extended and Time-Only. Daily, which is the default, is said to last 24 hours, while Extended will keep the watch alive for multiple days without turning off notifications and heart rate monitoring. And as the name implies, Time-Only only shows the time. There’s also a custom mode for those who want to adjust their own settings.

Fossil’s Gen 5 smartwatches are now available for pre-order in the U.S. and EMEA and will begin shipping Aug 26. For APAC, Fossil only says they’re “coming soon”.
