Fitbit announces new Versa and Ace smartwatches

Fitbit is back with not one but two smartwatches. The Versa is a touted as a rival to the Apple Watch, while the Ace is an activity tracker designed especially for children.

2017 wasn't the best year for Fitbit. Once the world's largest wearable brand, Fitbit saw its market share dwindle over the past year. The latest figures by IDC say that it is now third, behind Xiaomi and Apple. The company hopes to turn things around with the Versa.

The Versa will be powered by the new Fitbit OS 2.0 and it comes choke full of features. To begin, it has a high-res touchscreen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. But the big news is that it is capable of 24/7 activity tracking (including sleep tracking) and has a battery life of over 4 days.

It is water resistant to 50 meters, which means you can take it to the shower and swimming, and it also has an integrated optical heart rate monitor.

One thing to note is that unlike the newer Apple Watch models (Series 2 onwards) and the older Fitbit Ionic, the Versa does not have a built-in GPS and will need to rely on your phone's GPS to map out runs and track distance.

Like all other smartwatches, the Versa shows you notifications from your smartphone. It can even show you reminders to get active and meet your daily exercise goals.

What's unique about the Versa are new female health tracking features. Specifically, it tracks women's menstrual cycles and helps them understand how it affects their overall health.

Ladies will be able to use the Versa and the accompanying Fitbit app to log symptoms like headaches and cramps. The app will then use Fitbit's new proprietary cycle algorithm to predict your next cycle.

The Fitbit Versa comes in three colors: black with a black aluminum case, peach with a rose gold aluminum case, and finally gray with a silver aluminum case. It will be available in April and is priced at S$318. It can also be matched with a variety of Fitbit accessories like leather straps or stainless steel bracelets.

The Fitbit Ace

The Fitbit Ace is an activity tracker for kids. According to Fitbit, it was designed kids 8-years and older and it will automatically track their activity and sleep.

It will even encourage kids to get up and moving. And to reward them, kids can earn special badges for meeting their targets.

Parents can monitor their kids' activity and sleep by using the Fitbit app and setting up a family account.

Battery life is rated at around 5 days. And unfortunately, the Ace isn't entirely water resistant, it's said to be showerproof and can survive splashes and spills.

The Fitbit Ace will be available in Q2 this year and will be priced at S$128.
