The first trailer for Sam Mendes' 1917 looks intense

Universal Pictures has finally released a trailer for Sam Mendes’ highly anticipated World War 1 epic, 1917. The movie has a very impressive cast, consisting of George McKay, Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Benedict Cumberbatch and Colin Firth among others.

1917 centres around two young British soldiers, Schofield (George McKay) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman), in a race against time. They have to cross dangerous enemy territory and deliver a message to stop an attack on hundreds of soldiers. The catch? Blake’s own brother is one of those soldiers.

Have a look at the trailer below!

Much like Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, this trailer uses a ticking clock to demonstrate how quickly time is running out for our protagonists. Sam Mendes seems to be going for a similarly claustrophobic theme with 1917, judging from the scene with soldiers wading through a literal sea of bodies.

Roger Deakins is once again collaborating with Sam Mendes as cinematographer, with the duo having previously worked on Jarhead, Revolutionary Road and Skyfall together. Roger Deakins never fails to make stunning visuals pop on screen, so if there’s one thing we can be sure about, it’s that 1917 is going to be beautiful. Morbid, but beautiful.

With a star-studded cast, an accomplished director and cinematographer, and a World War 1 setting that’s rare for blockbusters these days, this movie’s practically guaranteed to be a winner.

We don’t have a specific release date yet, but 1917 will be having a limited US release on 25th December this year. Hopefully we’ll see it reach Asia around the same time too!
