Following up on his investor note last month, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple will be introducing the first ARM-based Mac as soon as the end of this year.

While Kuo did not reveal specific details on the Mac model, he expects a shipment timeframe of Q4 2020 to Q1 2021. His earlier investor note suggests that the ARM processor is based on a cutting-edge 5nm process which will be the "core technology" for Apple products in the next 12 to 18 months.

Intel reportedly predicted a similar timeframe for Apple to switch to ARM-based chips. By developing its own ARM processors, Apple has greater control over the performance and product cycles of its Mac lineup instead of relying on Intel's roadmap. Bloomberg also suggested two years ago that Apple will use its own ARM chips in Macs from 2020.

Kuo also expects a major design revamp of the MacBook lineup in 2021. While he has no information on the new design, Apple has been using the aluminium unibody and glass enclosure for many years.
