Essential is shutting down, no future support for the Essential Phone
Essential Products, which released the Essential phone in 2017, is shutting down.
In a blog update, the company shared that it has made the difficult decision to cease operations and shutdown Essential after realizing there is no clear path to deliver its next smartphone to consumers.
The next smartphone was introduced under Project GEM, which was a new mobile experience that Essential's hardware, software and cloud teams had been working on for the past few years.
Essential also announced that the security update released on 3 February is the last update from the software team for its first smartphone. While the phone will continue to work, the company will not be providing any additional updates or customer support.
Essential Products was founded by Android creator Andy Rubin. It introduced the Essential smartphone in May 2017. A year later, Essential was reportedly considering a sale of the company.
