Epson's newest A4 inkjet printers can print thousands of pages thanks to ink packs

Epson WorkForce Pro WF-C5790 and WF-C5290.

Epson’s printer focus these days is all about creating inkjet models that rival their laser counterparts, both in areas of print quality and reliability. And today the Japanese maker has launched the WF-C5000 series, printers that the company says deliver as much as 50% lower running costs than many top-selling color laser printers in the market.

A successor to the original WorkForce Pro range, the new WF-C5000 series printers’ tentpole features are their high ink yield and fast printing rates. The former is made possible by their use of Epson’s Replaceable Ink Pack System (RIPS), which in simple terms, uses ink packs instead of ink cartridges to hold more ink. Each standard ink pack prints up to 3,000 pages in black or color; and for users that print a lot of mono documents, XL black ink packs that print up to 10,000 pages are also available separately. To be clear, Epson has long used RIPS on its WorkForce offerings, just that this is the first time we see it on consumer and small business-oriented models.

The WF-C5000 printers also use Epson’s PrecisionCore printhead to achieve print speeds of up to 24ppm. Because there’s no need to heat up the printhead, you’re looking at a fast first page print out speed of 4.8 seconds, and a maximum monthly duty cycle of 45,000 pages. The printers also support automatic duplex printing of up to 15ipm for A4, and you can add another paper cassette to bring total capacity to 830 sheets. Additionally, Epson says its DURABrite Ultra ink offers laser-like quality prints that are water and smudge-resistant.

The two new WF-C5000 series printers launching in Singapore today are the WF-C5290 and WF-C5790. The main difference is the latter is an all-in-one device with additional scan (up to 24ppm), copy, and fax functions. Both printers support Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, NFC, and USB 2.0 connectivity, as well as Epson Connect, which enables wireless connectivity to mobile devices. Advanced workflow solutions such as Epson Device Admin for printer fleet management; Epson Print Admin for centralized print management and user authentication; and Document Capture Pro and Document Capture Pro Server for document scanning and storage are also included.

Epson is also keen to highlight its commitment to reduce the environmental impact of printing. More specifically, the WF-C5000 series are Energy Star compliant, and have much lower TEC values of 0.2kwh compared to laser printers. The WF-C5290 uses only 22W during standard operation, while the multi-function WF-C5790 uses 25W.

The Epson WF-C5290 and WF-C5790 are priced at S$249 and S$429 respectively, and are available starting today.
