Engineering flaw reportedly led to Apple scrapping plans for next-gen GPU on A16
The Apple A16 chip could have a more powerful GPU with ray tracing according to a report by The Information.
Two sources with direct knowledge of the matter claim the A16 chip was supposed to have a generational leap for the GPU, but Apple engineers made an "unprecedented" mistake in the chip design.
Apparently, the engineers were "too ambitious with adding new features" and the GPU needed more power than they had expected in software simultations. This could have an impact on battery life and make the iPhone 14 pro too hot.
As the engineers discovered the flaw late in development, they had to fall back on an architecture similar to the A15 chip from the iPhone 13 Pro.
The Information's report also covers the problems within the Apple Silicon team. Although Johny Srouji leads the team "like a well-oiled machine", talent exodus to rival companies and limits of Moore's law continue to be key challenges.
