Eidos-Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy game has finally been fully unveiled at E3 2021, after being leaked back in 2017. Aptly titled ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, the game lets you play as Star-Lord in a single player third-person action-adventure story campaign that takes this band of misfits into the cosmos.

Watch the trailer below:

Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t an adaptation of James Gunn’s movies, but the Marvel comics they’re based on instead. Hence, you’ll notice more comic-inspired designs for this team - such as Drax being slightly smaller than his movie counterpart and Gamora looking sharp in black-and-white body armour. The game places you in the jet-powered boots of Peter Quill, AKA Star-Lord as you lead this strange collection of outcasts and misfits on an interstellar adventure.

Other characters from the Marvel universe make an appearance in these reveal trailers too, such as Mantis - whom fans might recognise from Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Executive narrative director Mary Demarle teased that during the creation of this game, developer Eidos-Montreal pretty much had their pick of characters from the Marvel universe - so expect lots of villains and other familiar faces to leap out of the comics and into this game eventually.

From what we know about the story so far, it looks like things kick off with the team inadvertently setting off a string of incidents that eventually turns cataclysmic. This original story is set years after a mysterious but massive galactic war, and they’ll have to undo the mess they created by taking on various Marvel villains across that same galaxy. One of these is the somewhat obscure Lady Hellbender, who once went toe-to-toe with the Hulk, She-Hulk and Venom in the comics.

At various points in the story, players will be presented with choices to make as they guide their team through dangerous missions - such as encouraging or discouraging Drax to hurl Rocket Raccoon across a canyon. The team will remember your choices and react accordingly, but the game does not have multiple endings. The consequences of your choices will instead manifest during combat.

In combat, you’ll control Star-Lord as he pelts enemies with blaster fire and flies around on his jet-boots. You can also throw commands at your team to execute abilities and combos. Your teammates might not be so generous in respecting your leadership if you haven’t been treating them well, however. Choices will also impact conversations you have with them throughout the story.

Guardians of the Galaxy will launch on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X on 26 October, 2021. That’s just four months away! Holiday season is going to be wild this year.
