Legendary digital photography site DPReview is closing after 25 years

The legendary digital photography website DPReview has just announced that it will be ceasing operations on 10 April 2023.

In a memo to readers, Scott Everett, general manager of DPReview said:

After nearly 25 years of operation, DPReview will be closing in the near future. This difficult decision is part of the annual operating plan review that our parent company shared earlier this year.

The "parent company" that owns DPReview is Amazon, which acquired them back in 2007 during the boom of digital photography.

Amazon is aggressively looking for ways to cut back on spending and most recently announced that it's cutting another 9,000 jobs on top of the 18,000 announced months ago. Sadly, it looks like the team from DPReview is part of these 9,000 layoffs.

It's unclear how much of a difference DPReview will make to Amazon's bottom line. As significant as it may be in the photography community, it is but a small operation compared to the vast industrial might of Amazon.

What's certain is that the community will now lose a valuable resource for reviews and commentary on the hobby of photography.

In the memo, Everett also said that the site will remain active until 10 April and that "the editorial team is still working on reviews and looking forward to delivering some of our best-ever content."

After 10 April, the forums will be locked and the site will remain in a read-only mode for a "limited period."
