Dolby Atmos is coming to Netflix, starting with Okja

Netflix subscribers will soon have more reasons to cheer. The streaming service will be rolling out Dolby Atmos support starting with Okja.

Much like how 4K and HDR bring a more stunning visual experience to the screen, Dolby Atmos is a cinema-grade audio format that places and move audio anywhere in your room more accurately. The catch here is, of course, that your audio/visual system will have to support Dolby Atmos in the first place for you to enjoy the benefits that the standard bring. One example is the range of LG OLED TVs (2017 range) that come with built-in Dolby Atmos decoding capability, which does away with the need to be connected to an external sound system that supports such or even requiring a playback device since the Netflix app is built-in to the TV. However, Dolby Atmost support through the LG OLED TVs is currently advised as "coming soon", as it's likely that LG needs to roll out an updated Netflix app for their TVs.

The only two Netflix capable devices that currently support Dolby Atmos is the Microsoft Xbox One and Xbox One S. That said, if you go by this route, you'll still need a sound system that can support Dolby Atmos to enjoy the output.

You will also need to subscribe to the "4 Screens + Ultra HD" Netflix plan - this is also known as the Premium Plan.

The list of Netflix titles that supports Dolby Atmos are still a little on the skimpy side at the moment, although the catalog is expected to grow over time. Apart from Okja, which you can read our sister site's review of it on GameAxis, the following initial titles will have Dolby Atmos support:

In summary, before you can enjoy a Dolby Atmos  supported movie title on Netflix, you'll need the following:-

  • A Dolby Atmos capable audio system
  • A Netflix capable device with Dolby Atmos support
  • A “Ultra HD” Netflix plan
  • Streaming quality set to High or Auto
