DJI’s new OM 5 smart gimbal is more compact, more versatile than ever

Who would’ve thought that a ‘smart’ smartphone gimbal can have so many upgrades? DJI just unveiled its latest OM 5 gimbal, packing in more versatility, a new phone clamp, and better portability. Let’s take a look at what it offers.

The DJI OM 5 is foldable like its predecessor, but it’s even more convenient now since it now takes up one-third less space when tucked away. The phone clamp’s new design also makes it compatible with more handsets, and it can still clamp onto mobiles with cases attached. The OM 4 first introduced the detachable magnetic clamp design and was the product's main highlight and hearing that OM 5 focussed on widening its compatibility is a big deal considering we were already impressed by the predecessor with a solid 9.0 recommendation.

Longggg, longggg, maaaaaaaaaaAAAAAaannnn (Sunset White).

Other additions are a built-in extension rod for better reach and an extra button on the handle for users to control the OM 5’s core features while extended. We

Returning features are the 3-axis stabilisation that supports walking and more vigorous movements during filming. However, DJI made the shooting process more accessible to newbies by adding 30 sets of preset shooting and tutorials via ShotGuides. Tracking (automatic following of the subject) was improved via a new ActiveTrack 4.0 update that works even at 3x zoom (up to 5m/s).

DJI OM 5 also packs a ton of preconfigured filmmaking shortcuts into its gimbal. There’s Gesture Control as well for controlling the gimbal via hand gestures, making it easier for selfie capture without using self-timers. DynamicZoom is an automated zoom function that imitates a dolly zoom, popularised by filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. Different time-lapse effects, like Timelapse, Motionlapse, and Hyperlapse are also available by default, all made possible with its core stabilisation feature. If you’re good with the joystick, the gimbal can even offer spinning effects through its rotation too.

The DJI OM 5 officially retails at S$219 in Sunset White and Athens Grey. The gimbal comes with a magnetic clamp, tripod, power cable, wrist strap, and storage pouch. Sunset White is only available via DJI official online store for the time being before hitting other retail outlets at a later date. The Athens Grey variant is available in all its authorised channels, including its Shopee and Lazada storefronts and retail partners.

The Fill Light Phone Clamp is an auxiliary light accessory for the OM 5, and it’s sold separately at S$65.
