DJI just announced the successor to its Mavic Air drone, the Mavic Air 2.

The Mavic Air 2 comes with a large Quad Bayer 1/2" sensor which can shoot 12MP images or a new high-resolution 48MP format. It also has a SmartPhoto feature that takes 12MP photos using advanced scene recognition, HyperLight and HDR into one mode for optimal results. It is the first drone in the Mavic series to support 4K video at 60fps and 120Mbps, and shoot Hyperlapse at 8K.

DJI says the Mavic Air 2 has new motors, new electronic speed controllers (ESCs), enhanced battery technology and an aerodynamic design to achieve a maximum flight time of up to 34 minutes.

The Mavic Air 2 supports OcuSync 2.0 which enables video transmission distance of up to 10km and 1080p FHD resolution live stream directly from its camera. OcuSync 2.0 supports both 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz frequency bands and auto switches between the two based on signal strength.

It is the first DJI consumer drone to have AirSense technology that warns drone pilots of other aircraft in the vicinity. Using aviation technology (ADS-B) to receive signals from airplanes and helicopters, AirSense will display their location on the drone pilot's control screen. There is also Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS) 3.0 which makes use of front and back obstacle sensors to create new flight paths to avoid collision.

The remote controller has been redesigned for a more comfortable grip and has a battery life of up to 240 minutes. It has a new clamp to make attaching phones fast and easy, and the antennas are integrated with the chassis.

DJI states that the Mavic Air 2 is now available for purchase in China while it will take preorders from today for other countries with expected shipment in mid May. It is available in two options:

  • US$799 - Mavic Air 2, one battery, remote controller, standard cables and wires
  • US$988 - Mavic Air 2, three batteries, remote controller, standard cables and wires, shoulder bag, ND filters and charging hub
