While Android phone makers continue to introduce devices with in-display fingerprint sensors, Apple is unlikely to take the same path for the iPhone anytime soon.

According to reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, in-display fingerprint sensor or Fingerprint On Display (FOD) technology will grow 500% in 2019 as Android phone makers introduce the technology on their mobile devices. However, Kuo believes Apple will not be bringing FOD technology to the 2019 iPhone lineup.

Kuo claims that Face ID is serving the iPhone lineup well and Apple plans to continue using the facial recognition technology for the time being while Android phone makers will experiment with FOD technology.

The next advancement in FOD technology, which is whole-screen sensing, is expected to arrive later next year. It will be a step-up from the current spot-sensing FOD that requires users to touch a specific part of the screen to unlock the device.
