Dell refreshes some of its line-up with new hardware, introduces new monitors

The X51 is now compatible with the Graphics Amplifier due to some desktop graphics cards being too big to fit in its chassis.

Apart from the news of the impending return of the Alienware 18, Dell's also revealed that they'll be refreshing select machines from their line-up. The Alienware 13, 15 and 17 gaming notebooks will all sport the brand new USB Type-C port, with USB 3.1 and Thunderbolt 3 support. The machines will also now have PCIe SSD support with up to 4GB/s transfer speeds and Killer network connectivity using the Killer Wireless-AC 1535 and Killer E2400 High-Performance Gigabit Ethernet controllers.

As before, the machines will also come with the latest in NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 900M series, though buyers of the Alienware 15 have the option of outfitting it with an AMD Radeon HD R9 M395X instead of a NVIDIA card. Dell hasn't revealed whether these refreshes will use Skylake processors, but considering the timing, it's a good chance they will be. Display options for the Alienware 17 now also include a 4K screen with IGZO technology, which boasts better image quality and reduced power requirements.

The company's also implementing what it calls Dynamic Overclocking; a utility which measures hardware temperature and adjust the optimal performance levels to match, ensuring optimal CPU performance at all times. It'll be available for all of their refreshed notebooks and the Alienware 18.

Dell also hasn't forgotten its desktop customers. They've also announced that they will be updating the X51 desktop unit. The X51 will come with Skylake CPUs, PCIe SSD support will be added in (similar to what's been done on the notebooks), as well DDR4 RAM support and a new liquid cooling system. Interestingly, Dell's also added in a Graphic Amplifier port. Dell's reasoning behind this is that the X51's chassis is too small to fit larger graphics cards like the NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan X.

Finally, the company also announced that they will be releasing two new monitors in the coming months. One's a 27-inch G-Sync Gen II compatible monitor (S2716DG) with a resolution of 2560 x 1440, a 144Hz refresh rate and a 1 millisecond response rate while the other's a curved 27-inch monitor (SE2716H). The G-Sync monitor will retail for US$799.99 and is available from October 10 while the curved one will be US$399.99 when it goes on sale on September 15. No word yet on what resolution the curved monitor supports.

Note that all the hardware announced is meant for the US only. Dell's not made any mention on whether any of the products will reach our shores yet.
