Crytek has revealed Neon Noir, a demonstration video that’s created with a new advanced version of CryEngine’s Total Illumination feature, to showcase real-time ray tracing that isn’t tied to any particular hardware platform. In this instance, Neon Noir was rendered on an AMD Radeon Vega GPU.

The Total Illumination feature will be added to CryEngine’s development roadmap for 2019. Do note that this feature is still in development, and the only way to experience this visual sensation is to fork out serious dough for NVIDIA Turing-based graphics cards with RT cores. Currently, budget-conscious PC gamers can look to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card if they are considering joining the real-time ray tracing bandwagon.

But for those who are willing to wait for the release of Total Illumination, this add-on to CryEngine version 5.5 does show some promise; it doesn’t seem to require a major overhaul to CryEngine, and upon its release, Total Illumination will be made a default feature. The add-on will also be optimized for APIs that include Vulkan and DirectX 12.
