Counterpoint says 2021 phone shipments affected badly by chip shortage
The smartphone industry may see a weaker rebound this year due to the global shortage in semiconductors.
According to Counterpoint Research's latest Global Smartphone Quarterly Shipment Forecasts, the total number of units shipped for 2021 may grow by 6% annually. This is a 3% drop from the initial estimate. Counterpoint claims several phone vendors only received 80% of their orders during Q2 and the situation is not getting any better for the rest of the year. In fact, some phone vendors are saying that they are receiving 70% of their orders in Q3.
The global shortage in chips will affect all phone vendors such as Samsung, Oppo and Xiaomi. However, Apple appears to be the most resilient against the current situation. The iPhone maker is facing issues on another front, Covid-19. The Delta variant is disrupting its suppliers in Vietnam, which will result in longer delivery times for the iPhone 13.
