This could be the reason why the Galaxy S8 has a rear fingerprint sensor

Time constraints and technological barriers reportedly forced Samsung to ditch the on-screen fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy S8.

Industry sources told The Investor that Samsung and its touch sensor partner, Synaptics ran out of time to develop the technology for the Galaxy S8. Apparently, Samsung devoted a lot of resources into Synaptics' technology last year, but results were disappointing. With production imminent for the Galaxy S8, Samsung had to make the tough call of relocating the fingerprint sensor to the back of the device at the last minute.

Leaked hands-on photos and renders of the Galaxy S8 seem to have confirmed that the Galaxy S8 will not have a fingerprint sensor embedded within the display. SamMobile and ETNews previously reported that the fingerprint sensor will be embedded within the display, which would have made the Galaxy S8 the first handset to have optical fingerprint identification. Having said that, Apple could implement on-screen fingerprint scanning for the iPhone 8 ahead of Samsung.
