Circles.Life's new Family Plan is a no-contract data sharing plan for anyone you call family

Circles.Life's new Family Plan is a no-contract data sharing plan for anyone you call family

Six SIM cards, for six mobile numbers across six lines, with 200GB of 4G data, 500 minutes of talk time, and 200 SMSes, as little as S$15 per line per month. In a nutshell, that is what Circles.Life's new mobile data sharing Family Plan is all about. But it doesn't stop there.

Officially announced today (8 April 2021), the new Circles.Life Family Plan is a new product and service offering by the virtual telco. Family Plan is a no-contract plan for multiple lines with individual SIM cards and no other "strings attached", said the MVNO. In addition to the no-contract component, Circles.Life allows and encourages users to share a Family Plan with other users - even those not from the same family unit (more on that below).

While shared mobile plans are not new (M1 has Multi-Service Saver, Singtel has Singtel Circle, StarHub offers subsidies with additional phone lines through its rewards programme), the Big Three's shared plans all involve additional components like fibre broadband and are an on-contract basis. These "strings" do not yet factor in other limitations that allow only next-of-kin or families within the same residential address to share certain plans.

The closest equivalent to CL's Family Plan is Vivifi's data sharing plan called Vivifi Share and Vivifi Us, which has a maximum of 50GB of data (before accounting for promotions) for up to nine users (Vivifi charges S$4.28 per 1GB beyond the initial GBs consumed).

Share with anyone, even yourself

According to Circles.Life, the MVNO allows and encourages its Family Plan to be shared with non-family members. That also means that Family Plan users can share with relatives and loved ones living in different households, friends from all walks of life, or even choose to use multiple SIM cards for multiple devices by their lonesome. The qualifying requirements for all six lines on a CL Family Plan are minimal, relative to most other sharing plans.

CL's decisions around its sharing plan requirements stemmed from its research into user behaviours around mobile data usage. The MVNO also found that existing sharing plans provided too many restrictions and requirements for qualification.

"Giving power back to customers is at the heart of what we do at Circles.Life. Customers are not satisfied with the status quo in the telco services they are getting, they expect an experience that’s on par if not better than the apps and other digital services they use every day," said Rameez Ansar, Co-founder, Circles.Life.

CL Family Plan breakdown

The Circles.Life Family Plan has a minimum of two lines, up to six mobile lines on a plan. Regardless of the number of lines within, the one plan provides the following allotment shared across all:

  • 200GB of 4G data
  • 500 minutes of talk time
  • 200 SMSes

To encourage more sharing, Circles.Life charges lower monthly fees based on the total number of lines subscribed to a Family Plan.

  • 2 mobile accounts: S$25/per month per line
  • 3 mobile accounts: S$20/per month per line
  • 4 mobile accounts: S$18/per month per line
  • 5 mobile accounts: S$16/per month per line
  • 6 mobile accounts: S$15/per month per line

In a way, a Family Plan from CL starts at S$50 per month, going up to S$90 per month, depending on how many mobile lines are registered within the shared plan. The amount comes before factoring in add-ons.

Family Plan add-ons and features

The following add-ons are also available to Family Plan at launch:

  • Additional 80GB of 4G data with rollover, at S$20
  • Unlimited talk time, at S$10
  • Data Roaming
    • Roam Boost A (S$5 for 1GB, for Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan)
    • Roam Boost B (S$8 for 1GB, for Japan, Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Macau, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia and USA)
    • Roam Boost C (S$12 for 3GB)

An optional feature of CL's Family Plan is Parental Control. At launch, the primary line user or owner can throw in an additional S$5/line to have Parental Control over a specific line. Parental Control allows the primary user to block data access to websites "that are deemed inappropriate" for minors. Additionally, a S$100 data roaming cap can be applied specifically to the managed line.

Upcoming features to Parental Control include data allotment - this allows the primary user of Family Plan to take the shared pool of data and allocate limits upon all Family Plan members. More features and tweaks to Family Plan may be added as more users come onto the new plan by CL.
