Chinese firm BOE could be close to securing OLED deal with Apple

Apple is rumored to be securing Chinese firm BOE as a second supplier of OLED panels for the iPhone.

Sources told Nikkei Asian Review that Apple is "aggressively testing" BOE's flexible OLED displays. The iPhone maker is expected to make a decision by the end of the year whether to include BOE as a second supplier of OLED panels. In the event that BOE secures a deal with Apple, the Chinese firm might be asked to supply displays for older iPhone models and repair purposes.

Nonetheless, it is certain to be a win-win situation for both companies. Apple would have more bargaining power to negotiate lower OLED panel prices and reduce its reliance on Samsung. BOE would have secured a lucrative deal to supply Chinese-made OLED panels for the iPhone lineup, which is likely to switch to full OLED next year.

However, the ongoing trade tensions between the U.S and China could affect BOE's ability to manufacture these display panels. Companies such as Corning, 3M and Applied Materials, which supply some of the essential materials and equipment to make OLED panels, could be banned from doing businesses with Chinese companies.
