China reportedly prefers to shut down TikTok in the U.S

China reportedly prefers to shut down TikTok in the U.S

TikTok is now at risk of being shut down in the U.S.

Three sources told Reuters that the Chinese government rejects the idea of selling TikTok U.S operations and prefers to shut down its services in the country. Chinese officials believe a sale would portray ByteDance and China as weak in the face of pressure from U.S President Trump.

The sources added that the Chinese government plans to use its revised tech export rules to delay any deal reached by ByteDance. ByteDance denied the report and claimed in a statement to Reuters that the Chinese government had never suggested to it to shut down operations in the U.S or in any other markets.

U.S President Trump issued an executive order in mid-August demanding ByteDance to sell its U.S operations within 90 days. So far, Microsoft has confirmed its interest in acquiring TikTok U.S operations. Oracle and Twitter have reportedly held preliminary talks with ByteDance on an acqusition.
