Check out the final trailer for Joker!

The final trailer for Joker is upon us, showing off Arthur Fleck’s slow and inevitable descent into madness. This movie will launch DC Black, a new line of films set in the DC universe, but separate from the cinematic universe of Wonder Woman and Batman Vs Superman.

Warner Brothers’ description of the film reads:

Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen.  Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society.  A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night… but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

If the trailer is any indication, this could be a stunning turn for Todd Phillip’s directorial career, considering how he went from directing The Hangover films to this. Joaquin Phoenix looks the killer part as well, although comparisons will still be made between his and Heath Ledger's mind-blowing take on Joker - fairly or not.

Personally, I can only hope this movie turns out well. I feel like half of what makes Joker interesting is his relationship with Batman, and without him the character tends to feel rather lacking. All of his best stories (The Killing Joke, Death of the Family, the Arkham series, Batman Beyond’s Return of the Joker) involve him going against Batman in one way or another.

Can the Joker really work without Batman? Does he really need an origin story? Time will tell.
