Snapchat is introducing a chatbot powered by the latest version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Named “My AI”, it is available as an experimental feature for Snapchat+ subscribers, rolling out this week.

According to Snapchat, My AI can recommend birthday gift ideas for your BFF, plan a hiking trip for a long weekend, and more.

Snapchat wrote that while My AI is designed to avoid biased, incorrect, harmful, or misleading information, and that My AI had been programmed to adhere to the company’s trust and safety guidelines, it warned that errors could crop up, calling My AI prone to hallucination and that it can be tricked into saying just about anything. It added a caution not to share any secrets with My AI and not to rely on it for advice.

My AI is currently available under Snapchat+ for a monthly subscription at US$3.99. When we asked the company if they would open it up to non-Snapchat+ subscribers the company said that they were launching My AI for Snapchat+ subscribers first given the experimental nature of the app, and the company is focused on gathering feedback from its early Snapchat+ subscribers to assess demand and learn more about how the product is being used.

This comes on the heels of Google launching a ChatGPT alternative called Bard (although it had a bumpy introduction), Zoom announcing the launch of its own chatbot, and Microsoft announcing the launch of a  new Bing and Edge browser powered by upgraded ChatGPT AI.
