RDNA 3 technology now available in gaming laptops with AMD Radeon 7000 series GPU

It’s not just CPUs. AMD has also announced a range of Radeon RX 7000 mobile GPUs at CES 2023, featuring its latest RDNA 3 technology. However, unlike the desktop release of fairly high-end GPUs like the RX 7900 XT series with nearly 100 compute units and complex chiplet packaging, the first salvo of their new mobile GPUs are targetted at mainstream performance needs to tackle the segment that will likely sell far more performance notebooks (think 1080p screens) than the high-end enthusiasts/creator laptops with niche specifications. Consequently, the Radeon RX 7000 mobile GPUs are made out of a single monolithic die structure using a 6nm process technology.

The lineup includes the Radeon RX 7600M XT and 7600M, designed for high-FPS 1080p gaming, as well as the RX 7700S and RX 7600S, meant for thin and light laptops. In addition to these RDNA 3 options, there are also a few mobile GPUs with RDNA 2 technology, which will likely be incorporated into more budget-friendly laptops.

The standout GPU is, of course, the RX 7600M XT. It features 32 compute units, 8GB of GDDR6 memory, and the ability to use 50 to 120 watts of power. According to AMD, this GPU outperforms NVIDIA’s desktop RTX 3060 in some benchmarks, with the ability to reach up to 184fps in Hitman 3 with maxed-out graphics settings, compared to 160fps for the RTX 3060. However, it should be noted that the 7600M XT is not faster in every title, as it lags behind the RTX 3060 by 9fps in PUBG (145 fps vs 154 fps) in AMD’s own tests. Here's how AMD positions their lead mobile GPU against NVIDIA's:-

It will be interesting to see how the RX 7700S and 7600S perform in thin and light laptops. These graphics cards feature 32 compute units and 8GB of RAM like the 7600M XT, but are limited to a maximum of 100W of power. According to AMD, the 7700S can reach up to 87fps in Cyberpunk 2077 and 147fps in Death Stranding with graphics settings maxed out at 1080p.

With RDNA 3, it is clear that AMD has developed a powerful architecture. However, its graphics cards have lagged behind NVIDIA's offerings in terms of ray tracing performance, particularly when using DLSS 3 upscaling. AMD has announced a new feature called Smart Shift RSR, which is designed to offer improved upscaling "decoupled from the GPU", though details about this feature are currently limited. AMD has stated that Smart Shift RSR will be available in the first half of 2023.

Gamers can expect to see AMD's Radeon RX 7000 GPUs in laptops starting next month. These GPUs will be featured in AMD Advantage editions of Alienware's M16 and M18, as well as the ASUS TUF Gaming A16. In addition, AMD also briefly mentioned the launch of several new Radeon 6000 mobile GPUs, including the Radeon RX 6550M with 16 compute units and 4GB of RAM.
