The latest version of Casio's G-Shock Mudman watch is here and it's possibly the most feature-packed and rugged one yet. It's called the Mudman GW-9500.

The Mudman is so-called because it's designed to be resistant to mud, which makes the watch ideal for hikers, adventurers, and the military.

In the case of the Mudman GW-9500, its front button and three direct sensor buttons are protected by cylindrical stainless steel parts and feature gaskets in the button shafts to keep mud and dust out.

And like most of Casio's newer G-Shock watches, the Mudman GW-9500 features a Carbon Core Guard structure that ensures toughness while keeping its dimensions down to a minimum.

So despite its Triple Sensor technology, Duplex LCD, and wealth of other features, the GW-9500 measures just 14.8mm thick.

To put that number into context, consider that the G-Shock Mudmaster GWG-2000, which has similar features, is 16.1mm thick.

Having Triple Sensor technology means that the Mudman GW-9500 features a digital compass, thermometer, and barometer/altimeter functions.

The digital compass is enhanced with a Duplex LCD, which means the watch has a dual-layer LCD so that compass graphics can be shown on the top layer, allowing the wearer to constantly monitor his or her heading.

The Mudman GW-9500 also features Multiband 6 technology so it can sync itself with atomic timekeeping signals from one of six atomic timekeeping stations around the world.

Other features worth mentioning are that it has Tough Solar and that it has 200 metres of water resistance.

In terms of colourways, you can get the Mudman GW-9500 in olive green, black, and black and orange.

Some readers might be tempted to draw comparisons with the Apple Watch Ultra, but these are really two distinctly different watches.

While the Apple Watch Ultra may be rugged, the Mudman GW-9500, with its resin and carbon construction is on a different level. Furthermore, G-Shock can be powered by the sun and it has a high level of water resistance.

However, the Apple Watch Ultra counters by offering even more sensors and features. For example, the Mudman doesn't have GPS and cannot track waypoints like the Apple Watch Ultra can.

Pricing and availability

The Casio G-Shock Mudman GW-9500 is priced at S$529 (regardless of colourway) and goes on sale on 4 August 2023.
