Starting from Friday, 1st July, you can share the cost of the taxi journey with another passenger heading the same destination through uberPOOL.

The carpooling service will be available as an option for you to choose in the uber app after you enter your destination and pickup location. UberPool will match you with another passenger who is heading in the same direction.

If you are the first passenger, the driver will pick up the next passenger along the way and Uber will notify you via the app. If you're the second passenger, the name of the first passenger will be made known to you in advance. In either cases, Uber states that it will not take more than a few additional minutes. Here's an overview of its benefits:

  • Cheaper rides as the cost of the trip is shared
  • Less congestion in the city overtime
  • Less time between trips for drivers

Since its launch in August 2014, there have been over 20 million uberPOOL rides globally. Over 100,000 people are taking pooled rides every week in over 18 cities around the world such as New York, Los Angeles, Beijing and Shanghai.
