Canon launches new macro prime and near-range zoom lenses for EOS R cameras

Canon's two new RF lenses, 24mm and 15-30mm.

Canon Singapore launched two new Canon RF lenses today (12 July 2022), bringing the total number of RF lenses to 30. The new lenses also help complete Canon’s EOS R lens offerings by plugging in the final gaps in its focal length offerings.

24mm prime lens for street photography

First is the Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM prime lens. As implied in its name, this lens offers a 24mm fixed focal length, has a low aperture, doubles as a macro lens, and has built-in optical image stabilisation (IS) within.

When mounted on an APS-C camera body, the focal length becomes 38mm (suitable for street photography). When used as a macro lens, it has a minimum focusing distance of only 14cm, with up to 0.5x magnification.

The built-in IS goes up to five stops, and can be pushed further to 6.5 stops with a compatible camera in-body IS.

Finally, the stepping motor (STM) makes the lens compatible with videography.

The Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM lens goes at an official retail price of S$969, hitting the shelves from August 2022 onwards.

15-30mm zoom lens for practical needs

The other lens is the Canon RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM zoom lens, with a focal range of 15 to 30mm. Canon Singapore said this lens offers an affordable option to budget-sensitive photographers while providing a practical focal range that’s also very portable (approx. 390g)  for travel photography.

At the 15mm end comes ultra-wide-angle framing, making it ideal for landscape shots or photography in tight spots. The 30mm end brings the user closer to the subject, making it resemble a point-of-view from the human eye.

When mounted on an APS-C camera, the focal length offered changes to 24-48mm.

Additional features include chromatic aberration throughout its zoom range, thanks to the lens’s two ultra-low dispersion elements to help minimise colour blur.

At 15mm, the lens has 0.52x magnification and a minimum focusing distance of just 12.8cm.

The Canon RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens officially retails at S$899, starting from September 2022 onwards.
