While the popularity of ink tank printers is on the up, there are still many users, especially enterprises, who prefer a laser printer.

To satisfy this segment, Canon has recently refreshed its imageCLASS line of color laser printers with four new multi-function models: the MF641Cw, MF643Cdw, MF645Cx, and MF746Cx, with prices starting from well under S$500.

Calling them elevated versions of the previous MF630 and MF730 series, the MF746Cx, which is the highest-end model of the lot, has a top print speed of 27 pages per minute (ppm). The MF643Cdw and MF645Cx aren’t slow coaches either: both are capable of 21ppm, up from the 18ppm on the MF633Cdw and MF635Cx they replace. Even the entry MF641Cw can do 18ppm.

Print speeds aside, the four new printers have a few common features, including gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity, a 250-sheet paper tray, and a 5-inch color touchscreen control panel. They also employ the same V2 Color Technology found in Canon’s imageRUNNER ADVANCE Generation 3 devices and offer a maximum equivalent print resolution of 1,200 x 1,200dpi.

Delving deeper, the entry MF641Cw and MF643Cdw are 3-in-1 devices that can print, scan, and copy, with the key differences being the additional 50-sheet auto document feeder (ADF), PCL 6 print language support, and automatic duplex print function that the MF643Cdw has.

On the other end, the MF645Cx and MF746Cx are 4-in-1 devices with an additional fax function, and both can do auto duplex printing and have an ADF that supports two-sided scanning in a single pass. They also support the Adobe PostScript 3 print language.

But there's more to the S$900 MF746Cx: it also comes with NFC support for tap to print, a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray, and the option of a 550-sheet feeder. It's built for a higher print volume, too: while the other models have a recommended monthly print volume of up to 2,500 pages, it’s 4,000 pages for the MF746Cx.

To help users work smarter and more efficiently, all four printers are equipped with Application Library, which in a nutshell consists of little apps that help to automate common workflows, as well as frequently-used forms stored on-device for you to quickly retrieve and print.

A good example is the Name and Scan app, which lets you send scanned documents to pre-defined destinations and easily retrieve saved files according to usernames. Another is Enhance Text Copy, which helps you to enhance the quality of copy output with pre-determined settings. Here’s the online manual for the Application Library for those interested to learn more.
