Brother's latest ink tank printers can now print up to 6,500 mono pages and 10ipm in color

The flagship model in Brother's latest ink tank printer series is the MFC-T910DW.

As more consumers start to pay attention to printing costs, Brother too is now making inkjet printers that use ink tanks instead of cartridges. Following up on its first efforts last year, the Japanese company has recently refreshed the lineup with four new A4 ink tank models, namely the DCP-T510W, DCP-T710W, MFC-T810W, and MFC-T910W.

For a start, Brother’s latest ink tank printers have all gotten a speed upgrade, and now print at up to 12ipm in mono. And thanks to a printhead upgrade (210 nozzles across the board now), the DCP-T710W, MFC-T810W, and MFC-T910W can also print at up to 10ipm in color, up from last year’s 6ipm. (The entry-level DCP-T510W offers a print speed of 12ipm in mono and 6ipm in color.)

All for printers use the same CMYK inks, with each ink black ink bottle priced at S$11.90 and each of the color bottles at S$8.90. According to Brother, each black ink bottle is capable of printing up to 6,500 black-and-white documents, while the CMY inks should serve up to 5,000 color pages. For those keeping track, these high yields compare well against Epson’s newest ink tank printers.

But unlike Epson’s printers that use pigment ink for their black ink, Brother’s inks are all dye-based. Brother says this will enable more vibrant photo prints. It’s an interesting pitch from Brother, because photo quality typically plays second fiddle when people talk about ink tank printers.

Like Epson’s and Canon’s ink tank printers, you can easily check out remaining ink levels from the front of the printers. They all come with a 150-sheet paper tray, offer wireless connectivity, and support popular mobile printing protocols such as AirPrint, Mopria, Google Cloud Print, as well as Brother’s own iPrint&Scan mobile app.

Delving deeper, if your needs are modest, there’s the DCP-T510W, which has all the aforementioned features, a 12ipm (mono) / 6ipm (color) print speed, and costs S$298. In addition to print, it can scan and copy too.

Going up a level is the DCP-T710W, which adds an 20-page automatic document feeder (ADF). Thanks to its upgraded print engine, you’re looking at a faster 12ipm (mono) / 10ipm (color) print speed, and a faster 8 seconds (mono) / 8.5 seconds (color) first page-out time. The DCP-T710W has a sticker price of S$328.

Moving up further we’ve the MFC-T810W and MFC-T910DW, two multi-function models with print, scan, copy, and fax functions, as well as wired and wireless LAN support. The chief differences between the two is that the flagship MFC-T910DW has a larger 1.8-inch color LCD display (only a 1-line display for the others) and full-sized keypad. And while it loses the manual feed slot that its siblings have, it gains an extra multi-purpose tray that can hold up to 80 sheets of plain paper of 20 sheets of glossy paper. It’s also the only model in the entire lineup that supports USB Direct Print for direct scanning to or printing from a USB flash drive and automatic duplex printing. The MFC-T810W and MFC-T910DW are priced at S$358 and S$408 respectively.

The new Brother A4 multi-function ink tank printers will arrive in stores this month (June).

The Brother DCP-T510W offers a print speed of 12ipm for mono and 6ipm for color.
