BOE dropped from Apple iPhone 13 supply chain due to OLED panel design changes

Chinese display panel maker BOE has not been making OLED panels for Apple since early this year.

Sources told TheElec that BOE's supply of OLED panels for the 6.1-inch Apple iPhone 13 has decreased significantly over the past few months. Supply was initially constrained due to the shortage of display driver ICs, but production was reportedly halted after Apple found out that BOE made design changes to the OLED panel.

The sources say BOE likely increased the circuit width of the thin-film transistor without informing Apple, which caused the iPhone maker to cut production. However, BOE may not be excluded from the OLED panel supply chain as Apple wants to use the Chinese firm to negotiate for better prices from Samsung Display and LG Display.

TheElec reported last month that BOE plans to supply OLED panels for the Apple iPad and MacBook. The Chinese display panel maker also aims to supply OLED panels for the iPhone 15 Pro. UBI Research predicts BOE may overtake LG Display as the second biggest OLED supplier to Apple in 2023.
