BMW's flagship electric car is a 500hp SUV called the iX

You are looking at the iX, which is what BMW is calling its "technology flagship" – a fancy term for saying it represents the very cutting-edge that BMW has to offer.

In essence, it's a large SUV with an all-electric powertrain, which kind of defeats the purpose of what is supposedly a more efficient powertrain but SUVs are what the market demands so here we are.

To reduce weight, the iX is made mostly out of aluminium and has a carbon cage that increases rigidity while minimising weight.

Despite being an EV (electric vehicle), the design is quite conventional. It doesn't require air intakes so the huge kidney grilles are used to house all sorts of cameras, radars, and sensors. And while it may look quite chunky, it has a drag coefficient of just 0.25.

The powertrain is BMW's fifth-generation eDrive technology and uses two electric motors to produce the equivalent of 500hp so 0 to 100km/h takes less than 5 seconds.

Total capacity is over 100kWh which gives it a range of about 600km using the WLTP cycle.

Like modern smartphones, the iX has a fast-charging feature. It supports DC charging up to 200kW so it can get from 10% to 80% of its full charge in less than 40 minutes – the time it takes for a quick bite and cuppa.

No word yet on local availability and pricing but BMW expects the first iX to hit the road at the end of 2021.
