BMW's going on in on EVs. After the iX from last year, the company is now announcing their electric saloon to take on the likes of Tesla's Model 3 and Porsche's Taycan.

Meet the new i4.

The i4 really an all-electric version of BMW's wildly popular 4 Series. The styling, with its oversized kidney grilles, is contentious but also highly distinctive. I still can't get over those grilles but I'll leave you to make up your mind about the way it looks.

Two variants will be available at launch. There's the i4 eDrive40 and the more powerful i4 M50.

The i4 eDrive40 is rear-wheel drive and produces the equivalent of 340hp. It can sprint from a standstill to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds. The claimed WLTP range is about 590km.

The i40 M50 is all-wheel-drive and considerably more powerful. Power is up to 544hp and so 0-100km/h is dispatched in just under 4 seconds. The claimed WLTP range is about 510km.

Both cars are built on BMW's fifth-generation eDrive EV platform and have the same 83.9kWh batteries. It supports 200kW high-power charging and can get from 10% to 80% in 31 minutes.

Availability and pricing

Deliveries will start in the first quarter of 2022 but no word yet on when these will be arriving on our shores. Local pricing hasn't been determined either but prices in the US start at US$55,400 (~S$73,233) for the i4 eDrive40 and US$65,900 (~S$87,113) for the i40 M50.

The i4 eDrive 40 has just been launched in Singapore. The launch price is S$311,888 with COE.

The more powerful i40 M50 will be available later. And although BMW didn't indicate how much it will cost, it is believed that it will be priced in the region of S$400,000 to S$450,000.
