Blood oxygen detection and better ECG features found in iOS 14 code

Apple is expected to bring two new features to the Apple Watch via a software update or new hardware this year.

9to5Mac had an exclusive look at iOS 14 code snippets and discovered that Apple could add the ability to detect blood oxygen level to the Apple Watch. Apple is also developing a new health notification to trigger alerts similar to the current heart rate notifications.

Healthy blood oxygen levels are said to be between 95% and 100% while levels below 80% can affect heart and brain functionality. Long-term low blood oxygen saturation increases the risks of respiratory or cardiac arrest.

The Apple Watch Series 4 and 5 have ECG functionality, but the feature has a shortcoming where heart rates between 100 and 120 beats per minute will give inconclusive readings. Apple is believed to be working to remove this limitation in a future update, either in software or hardware.

Aside from these two features, Apple is rumoured to be bringing native sleep tracking to the Apple Watch this year.
