BlackBerry partners Baidu to drive connected and autonomous car technologies forward

BlackBerry Limited and Baidu Inc. will be collaborating to develop and deploy connected and autonomous vehicle technology, said the companies in a joint statement late last week.

The firms signed a statement of intent, and it will see Baidu implementing BlackBerry's QNX operating system into their Apollo autonomous driving platform. BlackBerry's OS within Baidu's Apollo will enable car manufacturers to "leap from prototype to production systems", said Li Zhenyu, General Manager of Intelligent Driving Group, Baidu.

BlackBerry and Baidu will also be working together on boosting BlackBerry's QNX Car "infotainment" platform by integrating Baidu's CarLife (smartphone software for connected cars in China), Baidu's vehicular A.I. DuerOS, and high-definition maps.

“Joining forces with Baidu will enable us to - explore integration opportunities for multiple vehicle subsystems including ADAS, infotainment, gateways, and cloud services,” said John Wall, Senior Vice President and GM of BlackBerry QNX. “Baidu has made tremendous strides in Artificial Intelligence and deep learning. These advancements paired with their high-definition maps and BlackBerry’s safety-critical embedded software and expertise in security will be crucial ingredients for autonomous vehicles.”
