Biostar has announced the GK3, its first ever mechanical keyboard. This follows on the September launch of its AM2 gaming mouse, a further sign of the company’s intention to diversify beyond its main motherboard product category.

In typical Biostar style however, the GK3 is priced at just US$45, not unlike the AM2 mouse which debuted at a mere US$10.

However, given the price, it’s not surprising that you won’t be getting Cherry MX switches. Instead, Biostar has opted for Outemu Blue switches (50g actuation force), which like Kailh switches are cheaper Cherry MX clones.

Outemu switches usually support Cherry MX-compatible keycaps, but there are certain key differences. For instance, the top of the switching housing is clear, so it appears that there is support for LED backlighting.

That said, it’s not quite clear how Biostar has managed to price the keyboard so cheaply. In addition to the mechanical switches, the GK3 also features an aluminum top panel and six-color backlight with seven backlight modes and pre-defined lighting styles for select games such as Call of Duty and League of Legends.

Finally, there’s a some waterproofing of sorts in the form of drainage holes that help route spilled liquid away from crucial components. According to Biostar, the electronics on the underside of the PCB have a special waterproof coating as well.
