The best selling Android phone in Q1 2018 is not from Samsung

Strategy Analytics released its report on global smartphone shipments in Q1 2018 and ranked the top 6 best selling smartphone models.

While it is obvious that the Apple iPhones will dominate the chart, it comes as a surprise that a non-Samsung handset is actually the best selling Android smartphone in the first three months of 2018.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5A, which is priced at S$129, has an estimated marketshare of 2% with 5.4 million units shipped. This placed the Redmi 5A slightly ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S9+, which shipped about 5.3 million units. It is important to note that both Galaxy S9 models only started shipping towards the end of Q1, hence Strategy Analytics expects the Galaxy S9+ to be the best selling Android smartphone for Q2.

The top four best selling phone models are from Apple; 16 million iPhone X units were shipped in Q1 which translates to a marketshare of 4.6%. The iPhone X remains the world's most popular smartphone model for the second consecutive quarter. The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 7 followed closely behind with market shares of 3.6%, 2.4% and 1.6% respectively.
