The Batman taps Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell to play Alfred and Penguin

The Batman is the next movie set in the DC Cinematic Universe to be released after Wonder Woman, and details on its cast are slowly starting to trickle out. TheWrap reported that Andy Serkis is in talks to play Alfred Pennyworth, while Deadline reported that Colin Farrell has been tapped to play the Penguin.

They’re unconventional choices to be sure, but to be fair, The Batman’s cast is far from conventional anyway. In fact, let’s take a look at the film’s confirmed cast so far:

Rober Pattinson will be Bruce Wayne/Batman

Zoe Kravitz will be Selina Kyle/Catwoman

Paul Dano will be Edward Nygma/The Riddler

Jeffrey Wright will be Commisioner Jim Gordon

That’s not all, though. Matthew McConaughey is also in talks to play Harvey Dent, AKA Two-Face. This all lines up with the rumours that The Batman is based after The Long Halloween graphic novel, which explores Harvey Dent’s twisted descent into madness and villainy.

Either way, it seems like The Batman is intent on building a proper rogues gallery for our hero to contend with. Batman has some of the most interesting and meaty villains in comics, so hopefully the film does justice to these characters.

On a side note, I absolutely adored Colin Farrell in In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, and I have no doubt he’ll be amazing as the Penguin if it’s written well. Here’s hoping!
