Audioengine has bolstered its HD series of active speakers with a new in-between model called the HD4.

So-called because it has a 4-inch driver, the new HD4 sits between the smaller HD3 (2.75-inch driver) and the larger HD6 (5.5-inch driver).

The aesthetic is unmistakably Audioengine. Minimalist and classy, the only adornment is the strip of metal that runs across the front of the speakers.

Apart from the 4-inch aramid fibre woofer, the HD4 also has a 0.75-inch silk dome tweeter that handles higher frequencies. Powering these drivers is a Class AB amplifier that has a maximum power rating of 120W.

For readers who felt the HD3 lacked oomph, the 45% larger 4-inch drivers should deliver more low-end heft.

Connectivity is good for a desktop speaker. There's USB input so you can use its built-in DAC for better audio quality. It connects via micro-USB which is a bit of a bummer but the HD4's DAC supports music up to 24-bit/48kHz so it'll work well with most lossless streaming services – just not high-resolution lossless.

There are also RCA inputs so you can hook it up to your external DAC if you already have one. There are RCA outputs too, so if you have a dedicated headphone amplifier, you can hook it up to the HD4 and use its internal DAC as a source.

And of course, there's Bluetooth connectivity. The HD4 supports Bluetooth 5.0 and SBC, AAC, aptX, and aptX HD codecs.

Availability and pricing

The Audioengine HD4 speakers are available now and are priced at S$799. You can find them on Shopee from various retailers including AV One, Stereo, TK Foto, and more.
