ASUS' upcoming ROG Phone III has up to 16GB RAM but no headphone jack

ASUS ROG Phone II.

The upcoming ASUS ROG Phone III will pack a 6.59-inch AMOLED display, an overclocked Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC and up to 16GB of RAM, according to specs published by TENAA, China’s regulatory agency for telecommunications equipment (h/t XDA Developers).

Sporting a design similar to the ROG Phone II — same shape and weight, ROG logo on the back that lights up, horizontal rear camera module placement, notch-less full-glass display with dual front-facing speakers — here’s a summary of the confirmed specs:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 octa-core SoC, with one core running @ 3.091GHz
  • Adreno 650 GPU
  • 6.59-inch, FHD+ (2,340 x 1,080-pixel) AMOLED display
  • Under-display fingerprint scanner
  • 8, 12, 16GB RAM
  • 128, 256, 512GB storage
  • 3-lens rear camera with a 64MP primary shooter
  • 6,000mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging
  • 2 x USB Type-C ports
  • No 3.5mm headphone jack
  • ROG UI on top of Android 10
  • 171 x 78 x 9.85mm, 240g

For the most part, these specs are self-explanatory. The ROG Phone III is long known to use the Snapdragon 865, so if anything, the listing tells us that its Kryo 585 Prime core has been overclocked from 2.84GHz to nearly 3.1GHz. The maximum 16GB is also news (12GB on the ROG Phone II), as too the secondary USB-C port on the side and the double-duty USB-C port on the bottom (audio + charging).

While revealing, the TENAA listing doesn’t have all the details. For instance, we now know the main camera uses a 64MP sensor and the secondary camera's resolution remains at 13MP, but the specs and purpose of the third lens is still unknown. Also, despite the very similar design and dimensions (the ROG Phone III is a bit thicker, though), it’s unclear if the new phone would work with its predecessor’s accessories.

ASUS is expected to officially unveil the ROG Phone III sometime in July. According to XDA Developers, the gaming phone will also come pre-loaded with Google Stadia.
