ASUS unveils ROG Strix GL503 Hero and Scar laptops for MOBA and FPS gamers

ASUS ROG Strix Hero GL503VM

ASUS has announced two new gaming laptops to cater to gamers who play different types of games. The ROG Strix GL503 Hero and Scar editions are targeted at MOBA and FPS players respectively, and they feature genre-specific designs to help stand out from the crowd.

ASUS first showed them off earlier this year at Computex, and they’re finally going to be available to buy locally.

The 15.6-inch Hero edition laptop features highlighted QWER keys, which corresponds to common key bindings in games like Dota 2 and League of Legends. More importantly, it features a 120Hz IPS display, so gameplay should feel smooth, responsive, and fluid.

The notebook is also adorned by the ROG brand’s signature Mayan patterns and distinctive dark blue accents, and the lid is a lot fancier than that on the Scar laptops.

That said, the latter isn’t by any means plain, and it comes with a gunmetal gray lid that ASUS says is intended to evoke the feel of Kevlar.

As a notebook designed for FPS gamers, it of course comes with highlighted WASD keys and a 0.25mm-deep concave on the keys. This looks like it’s intended to help guide your fingers back into place easily, and ensure that you don’t miss a firefight while fumbling around with the keyboard.

In addition, the keyboard also offers 4-zone RGB backlighting that you can customize to suit your preferences, same as on the Hero laptop.

ASUS ROG Strix Scar GL503VS

The Scar laptop is available in both 15.6-inch (GL503VS) and 17.3-inch (GL703VM) models, where the GL503VS offers an even higher 144Hz refresh rate while the GL703VM sticks to 120Hz.

All the Hero and Scar models are powered by an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 RAM.

The main differences lie in the graphics configurations. The ROG Strix Hero GL503VM and Scar GL703VM are equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, while the ROG Strix Scar GL503VS gets a more powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB, perhaps to better fuel its higher refresh rate panel. Both Scar laptops also get a larger 256GB PCIe SSD and 1TB HDD, while the Hero model makes do with a 128GB PCIe SSD (it also gets a 1TB drive).

ASUS says there are specially crafted venting holes above the keyboard and at the bottom of the laptop to allow more intake of cool air and keep all the hardware chilly. The fans are also more powerful 12V units, and are supposedly able to work faster to further boost air flow.

Plenty of I/O options are also available for you to hook up your devices, and you get a total of four USB 3.1 (Gen 1) ports and one USB 3.1 (Gen 2) Type-C port.

And finally, here’s a look at their prices:

  • ASUS ROG Strix Hero GL503VM – S$2,698
  • ASUS ROG Strix Scar GL503VS – S$3,498
  • ASUS ROG Strix Scar GL703VM – S$2,898

The laptops are now available to buy at SITEX 2017 and ASUS Brand Stores and authorized retailers.
