ARKit 3.5 released for developers to take advantage of iPad Pro's LiDAR Scanner

ARKit 3.5 enables more accurate depth estimation in People Occlusion.

While current AR apps aren't optimised for the LiDAR Scanner in the new iPad Pro models, the release of ARKit 3.5 is likely to help developers take advantage of the new depth-sensing system.

Apple highlights three major changes that come with ARKit 3.5, which are Scene Geometry, Instant AR and Improved Motion Capture and People Occlusion.

Scene Geometry allows the user to create a topological map of the space with labels identifying floors, walls, ceilings, windows, doors and seats. Instant AR enables quick plane detection, which allows for instant placement of AR objects in the real world without scanning. This feature is automatically enabled on the iPad Pro for all apps built with ARKit, without the need for any code changes. ARKit 3.5 also allows more accurate depth estimation in People Occlusion and height estimation in Motion Capture.

The recently announced iPad Pro models are the only devices to have LiDAR Scanners. Apple is expected to use the same hardware for the upcoming iPhones.
