Apple's future foldable iPhone or iPad could come with a notification strip that has touchscreen functionality.

Spotted by Patently Apple, the latest patent has a drastically different approach to the foldable design compared to previous applications. The uncovered or exposed display area (labelled as 14P in the image) can be used to show any suitable content such as incoming messages, calendar content, alarms, battery status, wireless signal strength and airplane mode status.

In addition, the 14P display area can be used by the control circuitry to show icons such as default apps, a set of frequently used apps and/or other content. The content in the 14P display area may be interactive ; it can show on-screen navigation keys or menu options.

Reliable tipster @jon_prosser claims Apple is developing a foldable iPhone/iPad device. Previous patent applications by Apple on foldable device designs include a foldable display that can be opened and closed like a bookone with a flexible hinge, and a '"joint operating mode" for dividing content into two screens.
