While Apple's mixed reality headset is expected to arrive early next year, the company is said to be working with Hollywood directors to create video content for the device.

The New York Times reports that Apple engaged Hollywood directors such as Jon Favreau to develop content that blend the physical and virtual worlds. Sources claim Favreau, the executive produder of Prehistoric Planet on Apple TV+, is "working to bring that show's dinosaurs to life on the headset, which looks like a pair of ski googles and aims to offer virtual-and augmented-reality experiences".

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg said in November 2021 that the headset will have both "augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) capabilities" and Apple aims to deliver a "mixed reality experience that can handle games in high-quality virtual reality". He added that the headset will focus on gaming, media consumption and communications.

Apple is unlikely to preview the mixed reality headset at WWDC 2022, but The New York Times believes the company will announce "software tools that would allow apps to add new camera and voice functionality. laying the groundwork for a hands-free interface that customers will eventually be able to navigate on the headset".

The new software tools could be part of a new platform, RealityOS developed for the headset. Recent trademarks filings for RealityOS around the world indicates an imminent announcement. Apple reportedly presented the mixed reality headset to its board members last month, which suggests that the device is near completion.
