Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Apple managed to sell more smartwatches in 2020 compared to the year before.

Counterpoint Research's data indicates that Apple shipped 33.9 million units of smartwatches in 2020, which is 19% more than the 28.4 million units in 2019. The higher shipment numbers is attributed to the Apple Watch Series 6 and SE, which also helped Apple solidified its market lead and increased its market by 6% to 40%.

Other than Apple, Huawei was the only brand to see growth in its smartwatch shipment. The Chinese company shipped an estimated 11.1 units in 2020, which is 26% more than what it did in 2019.

Overall, Counterpoint Research observed a major market shift to more expensive smartwatches with Apple, Samsung and Garmin leading the way. The $300-plus segments grew by 8% thanks to Apple which had a dominant market share of 70% in this category. Looking ahead, flagship smartwatches will continue to sell well while budget players such as Oppo and Realme will help to bring down the prices.
