Apple Watch managed to detect serious heart issue which the hospital ECG missed

The Apple Watch Series 5 and its ECG app.

The Apple Watch is once again credited for saving the life of its users.

According to an article published by the European Heart Journal, an 80-year-old woman went to the hospital after she experienced chest pain and irregular heart rates. The hospital's 12-channel ECG and blood tests did not reveal anything amiss.

However, the woman showed cardiologists the ECG readings made by her Apple Watch which indicated tracings with marked ST-segment depression. Further testing managed to detect a serious heart issue known as coronary ischemia. She was subsequently treated with coronary artery stenting and discharged from the hospital a day later.

The report written by the cardiologists describes how the development of smart technologies will pave the way for new diagnostic possibilities. They believe the Apple Watch and its ECG app may be used not only to detect atrial fibrillation or atrioventricular-conduction disturbances, but also to detect myocardial ischaemia.
