The Apple Watch has the most accurate pulse reader among wearables

The Apple Watch has the most accurate pulse reader among wearables

While some wearables come with heart rate sensors, the accuracy will differ across the board. Based on a study published in JAMA Cardiology, researchers tested and compared four popular wearables in measuring heart rate.

The four wearables are the Fitbit Charge HR, Apple Watch, Mio Alpha and Basis Peak. 50 healthy adults were hooked up to an electrocardiogram (EKG) and measured at rest, walking and jogging on a treadmill. The Apple Watch emerged as the most accurate wearable with an average score of 90% while the other wearables "dropped off into the low 80s for their accuracy".

However, researchers noted that accuracy decreased as the intensity increased. This boils down to the limitation of current wrist technology where there is a need to have good contact between the photosensing cells. As the level of physical activity increases, the wearable may lose some of the contact.

Nonetheless, most consumer wearables are not meant to be used as medical devices and only serve to provide generic information on the fitness level of the users. Apple is said to be one of the few tech companies to be focusing on health with its Apple Watch
