Remember how Apple said they’re adding ‘other digital keys’ to Apple Wallet earlier this year? The company also name-dropped Hyatt as a hotel partner but not much was said after teasing the feature.

Today, Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced the introduction of digital room keys via Apple Wallet. This feature is rolling out in six U.S.-based Hyatted-owned hotels. Hyatt also explained how the new digital hotel room keys work.

“We are proud to work with Apple to launch this game-changing digital experience. Many consumer technologies evolve through a ‘tipping point’ that drives a change in adoption. We believe our collaboration with Apple on this new approach to room keys in Apple Wallet can be exactly that,” said Julia Vander Ploeg, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Digital and Technology, Hyatt.

Currently, this Apple Wallet feature works on iPhones with iOS 15, and Apple Watch wearables running watchOS 8. Guests of participating hotels can add a digital room key to their Apple Wallet upon reservation.

After checking in, the digital key updates with a room number when the room’s ready. Any room changes (different rooms, extending stay, etc.) are also updated in Apple Wallet, and Hyatt updates the key’s status accordingly without requiring the guest to go to the front desk or reception.

Just like how most hotels require the room key to access its facilities (gym, spa, pool, etc.), the Apple Wallet version of Hyatt room keys also enables access the same way. To unlock, simply tap the iPhone or Apple Watch against the NFC readers. The digital keys still work even when the iPhone’s battery is flat (up to five hours), as shared in our iOS 15 favourite features list.

The equipment enabling Hyatt’s and Apple’s digital room keys are door locks by ASSA ABLOY Global Solutions working in tandem with cloud-based Vostio Access Management for digital key information.
