Apple to use an "all glass" enclosure with AMOLED screen for the iPhone in 2017?

Apple used a glass front and back for the iPhone 4s (left) and 4 (right) a few years ago.

The iPhone 7 may not be receiving a major design overhaul this year as Apple is said to be saving that for 2017.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released a new report claiming that a major redesign is expected in 2017 where Apple will ditch the aluminium chassis for an "all-glass" enclosure. With more Android vendors adopting aluminum designs, Kuo believes Apple wants to differentiate the iPhone with the use of new materials.

To compensate for the slight weight increase due to use of glass, Apple is said to be using AMOLED display panels which are thinner and lighter. This lends credence to a report by The Korea Herald last week that Samsung has agreed to a deal with Apple to supply 100 million units of 5.5-inch AMOLED panels annually.

Kuo reported earlier in March that Apple was deciding between glass, plastic and ceramic casing for the 2017 iPhone casing. In addition, the 2017 iPhone reportedly will have "a completely new form factor design" with narrower bezels and a more comfortable grip.
