Apple to stop making HomePod, will focus on the HomePod mini

The Apple HomePod.

Four years after introducing its first smart speaker, Apple is discontinuing the HomePod.

In a statement to TechCrunch, Apple says it will be discontinuing the original HomePod. The smart speaker will continue to be available while stocks last, and it will provide HomePod customers with software updates, service and support through Apple Care. Apple added that it will be focusing efforts on the US$99 HomePod mini, which has been a hit since its introduction last year.

The original HomePod is deemed a tough sell even for Apple fans. While it offers good dynamic range, clear treble and deep bass, we found the lack of line-in and Bluetooth audio streaming support disappointing. Siri on the HomePod isn't impressive either; it cannot differentiate voices, calendar events and set multuple timers.
