Apple shipped 6.8 million smartwatches in Q3 2019, up 51% from last year

The Apple Watch Series 5 could boost Apple's market share in the upcoming holiday season.

Apple continues to maintain its lead over rivals in the global smartwatch market.

According to data from Strategy Analytics' Wearable Device Ecosystems (WDE) service, Apple shipped 6.8 million smartwatches in Q3 2019. This is an increase of 51% from 4.5 million units over the same period last year. Apple's market share grew from 45% to 48%.

Samsung, which holds the second position in the market, also saw significant growth in market share. It managed to ship 1.9 million smartwatches, which is almost double of the 1.1 million units a year ago. Its market share grew from 11% to 13%.

Fitbit saw its market share fall to 11% from 15% although it shipped slightly more smartwatches in Q3. The future of Fitbit is unclear at the moment after Google announced that it would be acquiring the company for $2.1 billion.
